Founded in 1990 in northern Germany, Hanse Yachts has established itself in less than thirty years as one of the most influential sailboat manufacturers in the world. Behind this success lies a simple conviction: making sailing accessible to as many people as possible, without sacrificing quality or the pleasure of being at sea. This philosophy has shaped the group’s identity and attracted millions of sailors around the world.
The Founding of Hanse Yachts Shipyard (1990)
The Hanse Yachts shipyard officially began operations in 1990 in Greifswald, Germany. From its earliest years, the brand distinguished itself through a rigorous approach to construction: solid hulls, ergonomics designed for short-handed crews, and quality finishes at a competitive price. The first production model, the Hanse 291, met with immediate success in Germany and was quickly exported throughout Europe, laying the foundation for a reputation that would only continue to grow.
The First Major Hanse Models (1999–2005)
In 2003, the shipyard reached a new milestone with the Hanse 531, the first production sailboat over 50 feet in the lineup. This accessible large cruiser paved the way for extended family or group passages. In 2005, HanseYachts expanded its sales network in France and the United States, consolidating its international presence.
The Group’s Development: Acquisitions and Diversification (2007–2021)
It was from 2007 onward that HanseYachts AG embarked on an ambitious acquisition strategy, transforming the German shipyard into a true international marine group.
- 2007: integration of the Fjord (Scandinavian motorboats with minimalist design) and Moody (high-end British sailboats) brands, strengthening production on vessels over 55 feet.
- 2009: acquisition of Dehler, the iconic German performance sailboat builder. Dehler brings to the group a unique expertise in racing sailboats accessible to demanding recreational sailors.
- 2013: acquisition of Sealine, a British motorboat specialist, further diversifying the group’s offering into powerboating.
- 2017: acquisition of the French shipyard Privilège, a benchmark in luxury catamarans, positioning HanseYachts in the high-end multihull segment.
- 2020: the Dehler 30 One inaugurates a new Double-Handed-Mixed class, reflecting the group’s commitment to accessible competitive racing.
- 2021: launch of the RYCK Yachts brand, dedicated to modern and accessible motorboats, targeting a new generation of boaters.
Today, HanseYachts brings together 6 complementary brands (Hanse, Dehler, Moody, Fjord, Sealine, RYCK) and several thousand employees, positioning itself as one of the world’s leading players in the marine industry.
The Hanse Philosophy: Accessible and Intuitive Sailing
What sets Hanse apart from its competitors is above all a user-centered design philosophy. All Hanse sailboats are engineered to be handled by a couple or a two-person crew, with cockpit winches grouped together, a well-positioned wheel, and light-filled interiors. The brand has also succeeded in offering boats that are spacious for their length, winning over thousands of owners looking to cruise with family or friends.
The Most Popular Pre-Owned Hanse Sailboats
The build quality and versatility of Hanse sailboats make them solid values on the pre-owned market. Here are the most sought-after models:
Hanse 400
A classic in the 40-foot range, ideal for couples looking to sail offshore without assistance. The interior is remarkably spacious for its length, and its seakeeping is reassuring. A large number of units available on the market.

Hanse 430e
An evolved version of the 40-footer, with an enlarged cockpit and improved ergonomics. Highly popular with families for its generous cabins and its well-proven seagoing character.
Hanse 470
The go-to choice for extended family cruising. The Hanse 470 offers remarkable liveability and genuine ocean-going capability; some owners have sailed it as far as the Caribbean and the eastern Mediterranean. It remains one of the brand’s flagship models on the pre-owned market.

Hanse 540e
For those who refuse to choose between comfort and performance. This large 54-foot sailboat offers interior volume worthy of a floating apartment, while maintaining serious seagoing ability. A rare find on the pre-owned market, and highly coveted.
