When does the Jeanneau shipyard enter the market?
The history of Jeanneau – one of the most prestigious boat brands in the world – begins in the late 1950s. Recognized worldwide for its motor models (Cap Camarat, Merry Fisher, NC, Leader, Prestige) and sailing models (Sun Odyssey, Sun Fast, Jeanneau Yachts), the success of the shipyard is inseparable from its founder, Henry Jeanneau.
It all begins in 1957 when Henry Jeanneau decides to build a wooden hull, disappointed by the performance of existing hulls in powerboat competitions.
Who is Henry Jeanneau?
Born in 1924, Henry Jeanneau was passionate about extreme sports: airplanes, motorcycles, water skiing. Upon his return to France in 1950, he discovered his passion for boats during powerboat competitions. He built his first boat in 1955 and won 12 victories out of 15 competitions the following year.
How did Henry Jeanneau enter the boat market?
Building on his success, Henry Jeanneau founded his own shipyard: the “Hall Nautique de l’Ouest.” There, he practiced the artisanal construction of boats in mahogany wood. In the late 1950s, convinced of the potential of polyester, he replaced wood to give rise to the “Sport polyester,” “Mirage,” and “Prélude” models.
After studies in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, Henry Jeanneau inaugurated a large modern factory in 1961 to industrialize his production.
The evolution of the Jeanneau shipyard from the 1960s to the 1980s
In 1963, Jeanneau launched its first motorboat series, Sea Bird. The following year, the new Alizé sailboats made their appearance. In the 1970s, Love Love and Sangria positioned Jeanneau as a leader in cruising sailboats, with 3,000 units launched.
In 1980, Jeanneau launched the Cap Camarat range with the first Cap Camarat 575. Then, from 1982 to 1998, the shipyard was the exclusive supplier to the Tour de France à la Voile, with three generations of high-technology sailboats.
How Jeanneau became a leader in the boating industry
In 1983, the first cruising sailboat in the Sun Kiss range was launched. In 1987, Jeanneau achieved numerous victories and speed records in powerboating. In 1989, the Prestige motor yacht range was introduced. In 1991, the Sun Fast range was born with the Sun Fast 52, and Jeanneau joined the Bénéteau Group.
The development of the Jeanneau shipyard since 2008
The Sun Fast 3200 was named Boat of the Year 2008. In 2012, Jeanneau built its first boat over 60 feet – the Jeanneau 64. In 2016, the new Leader, Velasco, and NC ranges were launched. In 2018, the Sun Odyssey 440 and 490 made their appearance. In 2019, the Sun Fast 3300 completed the race-cruiser range.
